ABC Board

Organizational Description

The ABC Board is composed of a chairman and two other members who are well known for their character, ability, and business acumen.  The members serve three year terms and are appointed by the Board of Commissioners.  

Authority of the Board

A local ABC Board has the authority under NC General Statutes Chapter 18B-701 to do the following: 

  • Buy, sell, transport, and possess alcoholic beverages as necessary for the operation of its ABC stores. 
  • Hire and fire employees for the ABC system.
  • Designate one employee as manager of the ABC system and determine his/her responsibilities.
  • Require bonds of employees as provided in the rules of the NC ABC Commission.
  • Operate ABC stores according to NC ABC laws.
  • Issue purchase/transportation permits according to NC ABC laws. 
  • Employ local ABC officers or contract for these services. 

Disposal of Profits

The distribution of revenue from the operation of an ABC store is regulated by North Carolina General Statutes 18B-805.  The Board first pays all operating expenses of the system, the taxes and surcharges required by NC law, 5% of gross receipts for law enforcement, funds for alcohol education and then if there is any profit remaining distributes that profit to the Town.
